U.S. Pistol Men Win Team Silver at IPC Shooting World Cup

The U.S. P1 (10m Men’s Air Pistol SH1) team of Michael Tagliapietra, Shaun Tichenor and Eric Hollen (pictured left to right) won silver today at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Shooting World Cup in Fort Benning, Georgia.

The team earned the distinction based on their combined score of 1644. The highest U.S. finisher in the event was Hollen (Colorado Springs, Colorado) who finished in 15th place with a score of 556. Tagliapietra (Fond du Lac, Wisconsin) finished in 21st place with a score of 552 , Tichenor (U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit/Brainerd, Minnesota) finished in 36th place with a score of 536 and Kerry Morris (Grand Prairie, Texas) finished in 43rd place with a score of 523.

Though shooting in a Minimum Qualifying Score (MQS) slot and thus ineligible for medals or placement, newcomer Marco de la Rosa (San Antonio, Texas) made a splash in his IPC Shooting debut, shooting a score of 552, which would have tied him with Tagliapietra and put him just four points behind Hollen.

On the women’s side, Tricia Downing (Denver, Colorado) finished in 17th place in P2 (Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1) with a score of 334.

This World Cup wraps competition tomorrow with the final chances for athletes to win Paralympic quotas coming to a close. U.S. athletes will be competing in the P4 (Mixed 50m Pistol SH1), R5 (Mixed 10m Air Rifle Prone SH2) and R6 (Mixed 50m Prone SH1) events. Hollen, Tichenor and Morris will get another chance at a Paralympic pistol quota when they compete in the P4 event. A quota is essentially a country’s ticket to compete in the Paralympic Games. Tagliapietra has already secured a quota for the U.S. at the IPC Shooting 2014 World Championships.

Other USA Shooting athletes who have already secured Paralympic quotas are John Joss(USAMU/Corsicana, Texas), McKenna Dahl (Arlington, Washington), Jazmin Almlie-Ryan(Houston, Texas) and Tammy Delano (Rome, New York).

The R5 event will see Israel del Toro (Cibolo, Texas), Mariah Beckham (Daleville, Alabama), Dahl and Almlie-Ryan taking the line. In R6, Nick Beach (Dresden, Ohio), Viktor White (State College, Pennsylvania) and Joss will compete.

Nearly 180 athletes from 48 countries are competing during the IPC Shooting World Cup for medals and Paralympic Games quotas.
