Survey: Americans Prefer Living In Neighborhoods With Guns

Despite the prevalence of anti-gun rhetoric bandied about in the media, a majority of Americans still prefer living in a neighborhood where they have the option of legally owning a gun rather than live in a place where guns are outlawed completely.

The results of a national telephone survey conducted by Rasmussen Reports reveal that twenty-two percent of likely U.S. voters would feel safer living in a gun-free zone. Conversely, sixty-eight percent of those polled said they would feel safer in a neighborhood where guns are allowed. Ten percent said they weren’t sure.

Participants in the survey were asked the following question: “Would you feel safer moving to a neighborhood where nobody was allowed to own a gun or a neighborhood where you could have a gun for your own protection?”

Of those who said they would prefer living in a gun-free area, 27 percent lived in the city, 24 percent lived in the suburbs and 14 percent lived in rural areas, Guns.com reported.

According to Newsmax, the study also found that voters under 40 are less likely to feel safe in neighborhoods with guns. In addition, black voters are less likely to feel safe than whites and other minority voters in a neighborhood where guns are legally permitted. Finally, Democrats were found to be twice as likely as Republicans and Independents to feel safe in a neighborhood where guns are banned.

The survey of 977 likely voters was conducted by telephone between June 8-9.
