At the beginning of this year, we reported on the new Springfield Hellion bullpup with a 16-inch barrel. But now, the company is offering the bullpup model with your choice of 18- or 20-inch barrel. As a result, the new Hellion barrel variants from Springfield Armory offer enhanced ballistic performance.
The Springfield Armory Hellion Bullpup 18- and 20-inch Barrel Variants
Building on the original 16-inch Springfield Hellion, the new barrel variants provide the same compact handling with enhanced velocity and downrange performance. Likewise, the latest variants still provide full ambidextrous operation, including the non-reciprocating charging handle, safety switch, magazine, and bolt release. Not to mention, even the ejection system can be switched from right to left side ejection.
Like the original Springfield Armory Hellion, the new barrel variants adapted the original Croatian VHS-2 design for the American market. This includes a polymer M-Lok handguard, six QD mounts, and a 5-position adjustable stock with a cheek riser.

Likewise, the BCMGUNFIGHTER Mod 3 grip delivers comfortable handling and control. However, the AR-pattern pistol grip is replaceable with your favorite grip. In addition, keeping with the VHS-2 design, the Hellion is capable of feeding from AR-pattern magazines. And it comes with one 30-Round Magpul PMAG Gen M3.
The upgrade comes in the addition of two new barrel variants, 18-inch and 20-inch models. Chambered in 5.56, the barrels are constructed of chrome moly vanadium with Melonite coating. Each barrel features a 1:7 twist and includes a 4-prong flash hider.
However, the 20-inch variant is outfitted with a ribbed forward section of the barrel, similar to the VHS-D2 (Designated Marksman). This section provides enhanced cooling and includes an integrated bayonet lug.

Finally, the Hellion features a two-position adjustable gas block. This gas system includes “S” suppressed and “N” normal modes to easily adapt to conditions and ammo availability. A full-length, handle-style Picatinny rail provides ample room for optics and comes with integrated flip-up sights. Correspondingly, the rear sight has a 5-position aperture setting.
Best of all, they come in at just slightly higher than the original Springfield Hellion price.
Availability
The Springfield Armory Hellion Bullpup barrel variants are available now with MSRPs of $2,016.00 (18-inch) or $2,031.00 (20 inch). For more information, please visit Springfield-Armory.com.
“The Hellion built upon the solid foundation of the VHS-2, adapting it to the needs of American shooters,” says Steve Kramer, Springfield Armory’s Vice President of Marketing. “With these two new longer-barreled variants in 18” and 20”, shooters have the option of increased downrange performance as well as features true to the original design.”
