At the recent Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous, Smith & Wesson showed up with offerings from its Volunteer Series—the XV Pro and X 308 Win. As you would expect from Smith & Wesson, they did not disappoint. The rifles feature the quality Smith & Wesson is known for, along with aftermarket upgrades shooters will love.
The Smith & Wesson Volunteer XV Pro and X 308 WIN
Building on an aluminum frame, each rifle has tight tolerances and solid lockup between the receivers, eliminating the rattle. Both rifles feature a 16-inch 4140 CM threaded, Armornite finished (inside and out) barrel—the XV Pro is target crowned. Correspondingly, the XV Pro includes a PWS 556 muzzle brake, while the X 308 WIN includes a PWS 762 muzzle brake.
The XV Pro features a 15-inch aluminum S&W M-LOK forend with Magpul Type-2 M-LOK rail covers included. However, the X 308 WIN includes a BCMGunfighter forend with M-LOK. Included on both rifles are William’s Gun Sight company folding sights. But each upper receiver includes a Picatinny rail for the installation of optics and other accessories.
B5 Systems provides the furniture for each rifle, including the SOPMOD stock and P-Grip 23 pistol grip. Additionally, both include the ambidextrous Radian Raptor-LT charging handle. However, only the X 308 WIN includes an ambidextrous safety selector, bolt release, and magazine release.
Each rifle features gas-operated action via a mid-length gas system, and rounds are sent downrange by a flat-faced trigger. Likewise, a chromed firing pin provides additional longevity. The XV Pro is chambered in 5.56, while the X 308 WIN is chambered in .308 WIN as the name indicates.
Each rifle ships with one magazine, with the XV Pro having a capacity of 30 rounds and the X 308 WIN having a 20-round capacity.
