Free self-defense courses for women are being offered by the Kansas City Police Department at the Regional Police Academy. The instructors, Officers Gary Knapp and Marisa Barnes focus on teaching women about learning the basics of self-defense. As women are usually a lighter weight than an attacker, students also learn the element of surprise and there is a focus on technique. “We have some knowledge that helps somebody and that’s what we are going to do and we would do it all the time, but they have us on once a month right now,” Knapp said.
The next class is scheduled for June 7 at the Regional Police Academy located at 6885 North East Pleasant Valley Road.
