According to author Rich Grassi, “A few years ago, Taurus rolled out its new ‘Slim’ line of compact autopistols. Available in 9mm or .40 S&W with either a blued or stainless slide, these single-stack pistols are described alternately as ‘single actions’ and ‘double/single actions.’ Designed for the burgeoning concealed-carry market, Taurus’ Slim semi-autos are clearly useful for ‘backup gun’ status for LEOs due to their compact size and powerful chamberings.”
In the upcoming February 2014 issue of Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement, Grassi test-fires the 709 Slim in 9mm, which “weighs in at 19 ounces empty. Taurus offers it with a black polymer frame and either a blued or matte stainless steel slide. My test pistol, officially the 709SS, came with the matte stainless slide. It’s a striker-fired semi-auto…with a slide-locking manual thumb safety on the left side of the frame.” He also goes on to relate its unique trigger system, which offers a second-strike capability should a chambered round not fire—a quality that could save your life if you can’t chamber a new round.
