Embellishment adds cost, sometimes significant cost. But that doesn’t mean plain rifles are cheap.
Take the Pro-Series 2000 from H-S Precision.
It’s a synthetic-stocked bolt gun – a description that also fits a bevy of “entry-level” rifles you can find at discount for less than you’d spend in a weekend at a ski resort. You’ll dig much deeper for a Pro-Series 2000. But you won’t regret it.
While this rifle has been around for more than a decade, new renditions keep turning up. Most recent: the CHR, a 2013 introduction with a blind magazine.
The new long-action H-S Precision CHR rifle has most of the features of the .223. But its receiver sports feed rails, as there’s no stainless steel box. “Machining those rails adds a bit of cost to production,” said Tom Houghton, Jr., guiding me on a tour of the Rapid City facility just before the CHR’s launch. “But it gives us the option to offer rifles with traditional floorplates as well as blind magazines.”
