Author Leroy Thompson is an expert in the field of VIP protection and self-defense. He knows all the ins and outs of keeping a principal safe, including the best hardware to get the job done. While SMGs and handguns still make the list of viable options, compact rifles known as personal-defense weapons (PDWs) have become extremely popular. But it can be quite the task trying to keep them concealed. Well, DRD Tactical has solved that problem with the new U556, which Thompson got his hands on in the upcoming January 2014 issue of Tactical Weapons.
Thompson writes, “I tested the DRD Tactical U556 upper on a Colt lower receiver, but DRD is now offering its own lowers along with complete CDR-15 rifles. The U556 upper allows the user to remove the barrel and store it in a case designed for the system along with the lower receiver, four 30-round magazines, a suppressor if desired and an optical sight. Measuring only 18.5 by 13.5 by 7.5 inches, this case allows for the unobtrusive carry and storage of an AR-15/M4 with a 16-inch barrel, or for military/LE personnel or those with the proper paperwork, an SBR with a 14.5-inch or shorter barrel.” With practice, he was able to assemble the rifle from its case in 20 seconds.
