A new workshop promoting women’s empowerment and self-defense awareness is being offered at Komar Jiu Jitsu in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, on Thursday, August 12 at 6 p.m.
According to the Press of Atlantic City, instructor Rich Komar hopes to teach women how to avoid becoming a victim.
“The main thing we will stress is posture and situational awareness,” said Komar, a retired officer from the Galloway Township Police Department and a self defense instructor since 2004.
The way one walks is a critical component of situational awareness. Komar says a majority of women walk out of a building with a purse or bag over their shoulder, eyes pointing downward and never looking at a distance of more than 20 feet in front of them.
“How you walk is very important. Most women don’t even realize they are making themselves an easy target,” said Komar.
In addition to learning basic self-defense techniques, this workshop will teach women how to have more confidence while walking alone.
To put on the workshop, Komar is teaming up with the Bright Light Yoga Project, which is “a group that helps individuals and communities create transformation in health and wellness through the healing power of yoga. One of the group’s missions is offering classes to women who have been victimized to give them tools to fight back and be empowered,” the Press of Atlantic City said.
