First Look at Rock River Arms’ New LAR-8 X-1 Powerhouse!

Sometimes you need to bring more punch to the party, and the new LAR-8 X-1 rifle from Rock River Arms (RRA) does just that. Offering .308 Winchester/7.62mm NATO power to law enforcement, the precision-minded, semi-automatic, AR-platform rifle gives a law enforcement agency and its officers more flexibility when dealing with violent criminals who may be ensconced in a makeshift bunker or where intermediate barriers make the deployment of a 5.56mm rifle less than ideal.

Rock River Arms’ LAR-8 X-1 comes with an 18-inch, fluted, bead-blasted barrel that is cryogenically treated and topped with the company’s own Beast muzzle brake. Surrounding the barrel and low-profile gas block is Rock River’s own TRO-STD free-floating, rifle-length handguard, which has several lightening cuts. Operators can also add Picatinny rails along its sides where needed for adding accessories. The LAR-8 X-1 rifle’s magazines are in the FAL pattern. RRA also employs an ambidextrous magazine release and bolt release on this gun. The stock on my test rifle was the RRA Operator CAR stock, which is six-position adjustable. A fixed Operator A2 stock is also available for shooters. The upper and lower receivers are hardcoat anodized black, and RRA offers the LAR-8 X-1 with either black or Flat Dark Earth furniture.

RRA guarantees these rifles will maintain 1-MOA accuracy for three shots at 100 yards. In range testing, I was able to hold a five-shot group to 1.25 inches with Federal Gold Medal Match 175-grain BTHP ammo. The RRA two-stage trigger was very nice with a clean break and positive reset.
