Southpaw Scatterguns: 6 Left-Handed Shotguns From Mossberg

For those who don’t live by the mantra that “one size fits all,” there is the Mossberg 500 Tactical L-Series Adjustable (#59819), which offers some flexibility in its black synthetic stock, which can be adjusted to six different length-of-pull positions to fit shooters of any stature. This 18.5-inch-barreled shotgun gives new meaning to the phrase “try one on for size.”

Available in 12 gauge, this is a mission-ready shotgun (#59817) that can be used with either a conventional buttstock or a pistol grip. In either configuration, this Mossberg 500 Tactical is reliable and rugged. It is a go-anywhere shotgun that can stand up to the elements and be ready when you need it.

Those who want the basics will find them in the Mossberg 500 Tactical L-Series Persuader (#59818), which features a conventional buttstock with a thick rubber recoil pad. It is a full 41 inches long so it can be handled more like a traditional long gun, and it offers a front bead for fast target acquisitions. It also has a 7+1 capacity for those times when you need plenty of 12-gauge firepower.

This particular Mossberg 500 Tactical (#59824) features a solid synthetic forend and stock, an 18.5-inch barrel and a fast-targeting front sight bead. This fast-handling model can use either a pistol grip or a full-sized stock, making it a great fit for close quarters. It offers the 500 series’ renowned ruggedness with unparalleled versatility.

Soldiers in the field will often say you can’t ever have enough sleep, enough food or enough ammo. The Mossberg 590 L-Series 9-Shot shotgun (#59816) can’t help with the first two problems, but it offers extra capacity for those who want to go to the “nines.” It measures 41 inches long overall yet weighs only a bit over 7 pounds. Another notable feature: A vented heat shield is installed over the barrel.

The 590A1 remains the only pump shotgun to pass the U.S. Army’s MIL-S-3443 requirements, and it has served in multiple branches of the U.S. military for more than a quarter century. The new left-handed version (#59815) offers everything its right-handed twin offers, including a heavy-walled barrel. It was designed for the harshest of environments and features a Parkerized finish, a metal triggerguard and safety button, an extended magazine capacity and an easy-to-clean magazine tube.

Left-handed shooters never have it easy. For all of its adaptability, Mossberg saw that the ever-popular 500 was lacking in one regard: There weren’t models tailor-made for left-handed shooters. Now that problem has been addressed.

In fact, the idea for a left-handed Mossberg shotgun, though considered for many years, was only precipitated by modern CAD capabilities when one of the company’s manufacturing engineers—who happens to be left-handed—was working on a receiver drawing.

Making what is in essence a mirror image of a firearm did present a few challenges, but Mossberg’s engineers were able to work these out quickly. There are also many crossover parts between the 500 and 500L, and the key differences are really in the receiver, barrel, bolt and some internal parts that had to mirror the right-handed components. This allowed for a shotgun that was truly designed with lefties in mind yet retained everything that made the 500 such a tried and tested shotgun.
